Heading to Adobe MAX 2008 - Roundarch and Merapi Goodness

It’s that time of the year again! You see the bright Flashes in the night sky and can’t help but to notice all of the code geeks Flexing their muscles… Adobe MAX is right around the corner.

This year’s MAX conference will be held in San Francisco, staring next Monday, November 17

I will be joining my comrades from Roundarch, along with a ton of other friends that work at either Adobe or other Adobe-centric design and development companies in San Francisco for this yearly event.

As usual, Roundarch will be a sponsor of the event, and I will be joining some other folks from our team(s) including two of my favorite people: Rhazes Spell and Pek Pongpaet.

If you want to follow my experiences at Adobe MAX, you can do so on either Twitter (dmeeker) or BrightKite (dmeeker). You can also follow the Adobe MAX placemark on BrightKite by looking for “max2008” If you want to get together, send me an email, direct message or stop by the Roundarch booth in the exhibitor area of the conference.

Jeff Maling, Roundarch’s President and Chief Experience Officer will be giving a very timely talk at the conference titled “Building Successful RIAs for the Enterprise in a Climate of Financial Uncertainty”. Here is the description of this talk:

“Join representatives from Roundarch, a leading rich Internet application (RIA) developer, as they share their insights about redefining experience design for the enterprise in today's financial climate. Roundarch will demonstrate how you can leverage new paradigm shifts in user experience to deliver cost-efficient, innovative, results-driven RIAs. Learn about new forces changing the game in experience design and how to integrate these forces into your approach. Discover ways you can demonstrate the dollar value of user experience, ensure it takes a seat at the strategy table, and help navigate today's tough financial times.”

This will be really interesting and informative. If you work in any type of management position and are going to be at Adobe MAX, you should attend this session. Jeff is a seriously smart business guy with a brilliant design mind and I can guarantee that he will shed some light on the current situation we are all faced with and offer some advice to help you and your organization brave the storm. Check out Jeff’s talk, on the Adobe MAX Web site.

Merapi Action at MAX

Aside from representing Roundarch, I will be working closely with my pal Adam Flater as we make the rounds to talk about The Merapi Project.

If you aren’t familiar with Merapi yet, you need to be! We are going to be doing a variety of interesting sessions related to the technology and if you are building Rich Internet Applications, using Adobe AIR, or have any involvement with Enterprise Java applications, than you need to check things out! In short, Merapi is a bridge between Adobe’s ActionScript and Java and if Adam and I have our way… it is going to change the way that you build desktop software.

Adobe AIR++
When: Monday, November 17th, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Where: Moscone West 2000

I will be attending this session along with Adam and other folks who are working on or with Merapi. Andrew Trice has been doing some very neat stuff with the Merapi code and his session will definitely be worth checking out.

Directly following this session, there will be a session about Merapi, sponsored by John and Tom, the men behind 360 | Conferences. Speaking of which…

Merapi at 360 | MAX
When: Monday, November 17th, 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Moscone West, Level 2

The guys at 360 Conferences have made the generious offer of allowing Adam and I put together a list of folks to talk about Merapi and show off some sample applications and dive into code. I won’t be doing much of that, however I do plan on hopping on my soapbox to talk about why Merapi is the best thing since sliced bread and about what it means for you, your company and your potential to push the limits of technology to solve the problems you may be facing.

This year, the guys at 360 are hosting the “official” un-conference at MAX. The un-conference will feature advanced Flex and AIR topics, and the area where this takes place inside Moscone is sure to be packed with folks from the Flex, Flash, and AIR development community.

This session will show off Merapi and will be full of code, application examples, good times and laughs. You’ve probably seen Jordan Snyder and Adam Flater demo the Adobe AIR application that controls the Lego Mindstorm Robot in real time. If you thought that was neat, then prepare yourself for a slew of new demo applications built using Merapi, Flex and AIR.

The folks that will join Adam and I include:, Andrew Powell, Andrew Trice, Holly Schinsky, and Joe Johnston.

We'll be demoing AIR apps that integrate with GPS, RFID, Eclipse, Oracle, Outlook, Growl, MacBook sensors, and of course Robots!

You won't want to miss these Merapi events and that's why we have three of them.

MAX Birds-of-a-Feather (BOFs)
When: Monday, November 17th, 8:30 pm -10:20 pm
Where: Moscone West, Level 2

Adam and I will also be participating in one of the official Adobe “Birds of a Feather” sessions. Because Merapi has gotten such attention, they’ve asked us to show off Merapi and some sample applications in a session titled “AIR Gone Wild”. This BOF session will be hosted by Greg Wilson from Adobe and Adam, I and some others will be showing more of our Merapi circus acts.

If there's a question you don't have the chance to ask in a session this BOF is a great place to come and ask it.

Merapi at 360 | MAX
When: Tuesday, November 18th, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Where: Moscone West, Level 2

Because Merapi always spurs a ton of conversation, we are lucky to be able to do another un-conference session on Tuesday. As Adam has mentioned in his blog, you never know what can happen at the MAX conference. With so many talented designers and developers on hand, a new Merapi application could pop up over night, and we’d just have to show it. But if we had no place to show it off? What would we do?!?!

Lucky for us, the guys at 360 are giving us another big slot to talk Merapi. If you can’t make it on Monday, join us Tuesday instead. We will cover some of the same material and show off as many demos as we can, along with opening the conversation up to the audience and having a “summit” of sorts around what we are up to, how Adobe is using our code, etc.
